Sterile Insect Technology Initiative

Today the South Australia Government made a commitment to build a fit-for-purpose Sterile Insect Technology (SIT) facility in Upper Spencer Gulf at a cost of $3 million.  The SA Government has also signed an MOU with a research consortium involving Horticulture Australia Ltd, the CSIRO Biosecurity Flagship and Plant and Food Research Australia to invest approximately $15 million over 5 years to develop a male only line of sterile Queensland Fruit Fly (Q-fly) and sterile fly management solution packages for use across the horticulture production areas of Australia. This research consortium is to be inclusive and additional research organisations and agencies will be approached about partnering in this exciting development.
